5 Car Care Tips for #NationalCarCareMonth

by Jeff Watson - Posted 4 years ago

April is #NationalCarCareMonth! So, we've compiled a list of a few important services to keep your car running in tip top shape!

People who get regular maintenance on their vehicles get longer and better use out of their cars. Ever wonder how you see some people driving their cars well into the 300,000, 400,000 mile range?? One word: MAINTENANCE! You can never over maintain your car. The more love you give your car the more it will love you back!

Here are 5 important things the maintain on your vehicle:

1. CHANGE OIL

This should be an obvious one. This simple task is essential in keeping your car in good working condition. Your owner's manual should inform you whether you need your oil changed every 3,000, 5,000, or 7,000 miles.
Oil lubricates your engine. If you run low or run out, your engine can overheat and blow, which will be very expensive to fix.

2. CHECK YOUR TIMING BELT

Depending on your vehicle, you either have a timing belt or a timing chain. Timing belts will need to be replaced between 50,000 and 110,000 miles. It's not the cheapest service, but it is thousands less than rebuilding an entire engine, which is what will happen if your timing belt breaks.

3. CHECK POWER STEERING FLUIDS

Some tell tale signs of a power steering problem are squealing noises when turning the steering wheel or heavy or stiff steering. If the pump runs dry, it can fail and cost you hundreds of dollars to replace.

Older vehicles and some new models have hydraulic power steering pump that is lubricated by power steering fluid. Ask your mechanic if you need this service done on your car.

4. TRANSMISSION FLUID REPLACEMENT

Transmission fluid deteriorates over time and at accelerated rates if you do a lot of frequent stop-and-go driving or are pulling extra weight like trailers. It's important to keep fluid at adequate levels to keep your transmission cool and lubricate all the moving parts.

5. ROTATE YOUR TIRES

This is often an overlooked service – but an important one! Tires are expensive to replace, and without getting regular rotations and alignments, your tires will wear at different rates and the life the tires will decrease significantly.

Show your car some love this month. They will thank you for it!
